REDDING POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES GRANT FOR COUNTY-WIDE DUI ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN

The primary cause of deaths on our local streets and highways remains Drunk Driving and the ‘Avoid the SIX’ DUI Task Force will keep up with its DUI enforcement in Shasta County as a result of a recent $98,000.00grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety to the Redding Police Department. Redding Police Department will administer the grant for the entire county.

“We look forward to once again working with our allied agencies and OTS in an effort to improve public safety. The funding provided by OTS has a direct and positive impact on our community in Shasta County.”, Redding Police Chief Peter Hansen.

The ‘Avoid the SIX DUI Campaign is named to send the message that if you don’t drink and drive, you will
avoid getting arrested by any of the SIX participating law enforcement agencies in the county.

The grant activities will specifically target those who drink too much and get behind the wheel. Officers will be staffing DUI/Driver License Checkpoints, multi-agency DUI Task Force deployments, and local DUI saturation patrols for each partnering. Additionally, funding will target the ‘worst of the worst’ repeat DUI offenders with Warrant/Probation Sweeps and Court Sting Enforcement Operations focusing on DUI offenders who leave court hearings and drive away on suspended licenses after being ordered not to drive by a judge.

“The Avoid DUI Task Forces have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths on our roadways in the last five years in California,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety.  “Tragically, DUI deaths remain the largest sector, at over 30 percent of traffic fatalities. This grant will help combat that, making Redding and Shasta County a safer place to live and work.”

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoints are a key component of the grant. These highly visible, highly publicized events are meant to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.

Motorist can expect to see special DUI campaigns during the winter and summer holiday periods as well as on Halloween, Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo and during local special events with identified DUI Problems. Funding for the grant comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Agencies participating in the ‘Avoid the Six’ taskforce include:

Redding Police Department
Anderson Police Department
Shasta County Sheriff’s Office
California Highway Patrol
Shasta County Marshal’s Office
Shasta County Probation Department

The holidays are a special time of year, but they are also a time when busy people are especially vulnerable to theft and other crimes. The Redding Police Department would like to remind local residents to stay alert this busy holiday season, especially while shopping.

Following are some tips to make your holiday shopping safer:

When shopping, stay alert to your surroundings and people around you.
If at all possible, do not shop alone. There is safety in numbers.
Carry very little cash; take only credit cards you will use; and use credit cards or debit cards whenever possible.
Carry ID, credit cards, checkbook, and keys in inner pockets of clothing, separate from each other.
Try not to carry a purse. If you do, carry it tucked close to your body. Do not let your purse hang loose from your shoulder or place the strap around your neck.
Never leave your purse, wallet, or other personal belongings in a shopping cart while you are shopping or loading your purchases into your vehicle.
When you've completed your shopping, make sure you have your keys out, ready to open your car.
Don't overload yourself with packages. It is very important to have freedom of motion and clear visibility of whom and what is around you.
Keep the interior of your vehicle clear of any valuables including CD’s, sunglasses, cell phones, packages and backpacks while you are shopping.
Put your purchases in the trunk of your vehicle and make sure it is locked. The interior of your vehicle should be kept clear of all valuables.

Wishing you and your family a safe and peaceful holiday.

The suspect made forced entry through a locked door into Fire Station #3 with a crow bar, while the fire fighters were asleep inside. While inside, the keys to the victim’s Honda sedan and his wallet, which contained his credit card(s), were stolen.

At about 8:07 A.M., Anderson Police Officer Casey Day observed the stolen Honda pull into the Tower Mart, which is located at 1975 Ponderosa Dr. in Anderson, CA. Officer Day then observed the suspect walk into the business.

Officer Day set up surveillance on the stolen vehicle and notified the Redding Police Department. Officers Becky Zufall and Jared Hebert, who were investing the original stolen vehicle and burglary report, responded to assist APD officers.

At about 8:10 A.M., APD officers observed the suspect exit the Tower Mart and walk back towards the stolen vehicle. Jared Anthony Thomas 05/04/87 of Redding was subsequently arrested for the stolen vehicle. Officers Zufall and Hebert assisted APD with a search of the stolen vehicle and found evidence linking the suspect to four burglaries, three credit card fraud cases and an additional stolen vehicle.

Also on November 20, 2011 at about 8:06 A.M., Redding Police Officer Doug Moore attempted to make an enforcement stop on a Honda sedan, which he thought might be the previously reported stolen vehicle. However, the vehicle failed to yield and continued southbound on Churn Creek Rd. towards Knighton Rd. The vehicle ultimately pulled in the T/A Truck Stop parking lot, located at 19483 Knighton Rd. Redding, CA. The male driver immediately fled on foot, while two passengers remained in the vehicle.

Officer Moore held the passengers at gun point while waiting for additional units to arrive. A perimeter was set up with the assistance of officers from the Shasta County

Kizer was taken into custody by K-9 Tarro and was later transported to a local area hospital for treatment of minor injuries he sustained during his arrest. The injuries were a result of K-9 Tarro biting the suspect.

The vehicle being driven by Kizer was found to have been stolen out of Redding on November 17, 2011. The original license plate had been removed and replaced by a stolen license plate. Kizer was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, evading a police officer, and resisting or obstructing officers.

CASE# 11-69908

On Monday, October 31, 2011, at approximately 10:12 PM, Redding Police officers responded to a reported traffic collision in the northbound lanes of S/R 273 at Girvan Road. When officers arrived, they found a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle disabled east of the intersection on the railroad tracks that parallel S/R 273.

The investigation revealed the Jeep Cherokee had been traveling north on S/R 273 when the vehicle drifted to the east shoulder of the northbound lanes striking a Pacific Gas and Electric (PGE) utility pole just south of the intersection. The vehicle then came to rest on the railroad tracks. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Alicia Hardin, 30 years, of Redding, was uninjured. She was wearing her seatbelt.
